The Meandering Monarch

Music and Art Enrichment for Children  I  Piano Instruction

Piano Instruction

Piano has opened memorable musical doors for me.  As a child, I remember playing with my grandmother on the baby grand as family gathered round for holiday sing-a-longs. In high school, I enjoyed traveling with the chorus to accompany them in competitions. Later in life, I played in worship bands, and at friends' weddings. Plus, I opened a Music Together® Center and led classes for parents and toddlers. All of these cherished experiences brought people together to celebrate and enjoy life, thanks to music! Since 2013, I have been sharing the gift of music through formal piano instruction. It is immeasurably rewarding to observe a child grow musically, and I love seeing where their foundational piano instruction takes them!

Why is piano is the best instrument for introducing children to formal music instruction? It is the foundational launching pad for most other instruments and voice! Plus, it is easy for the beginner to feel success with few obstacles (push a key versus tuning and holding an instrument with accuracy). The investment in learning to play will bring about many new opportunities, including music instruction's amazing effects on cognitive, social, and emotional brain development! Watch the video to see why.

Course Work

I believe it is essential to start piano instruction with both playing and music theory.  As certified a teacher, I have been trained on identifying each student’s learning style to adapt lessons accordingly. One size does not fit all.

Ages 4-7: I enjoy
Music for Little Mozart series.  This series introduces kids to piano-buddy stuffed animals, Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse, who help your child feel confident in learning the piano. Plus, it contains a story that students can read with you at a Level 1 and 2 literacy level.

Ages 8 and up: I recommend
Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber, which includes books in lesson, theory, performance and technique & artistry. I also supplement with other books, and individual pieces, from classical to contemporary.

High school / Adults: Adult Piano Adventures by Faber, plus supplemented selections tailored to the learning style and interests of the musician.
